STYLE FEATURE: BRIGETTE LUNDY-PAINE

Updated: Jun 7, 2024

We invited multitalented Brigette Lundy-Paine over to the SKINJOB NYC studio/lab in Bushwick, to basically play dress up in our upcycle/thrift shop.

Brigette and I met in November of '22, I answered a call to action for paparazzi photographers for a shoot for WAIF Magazine. While I was low-key swooning and fan girl-ing over unexpectedly meeting and running around SoHo with Netflix series ATYPICAL's "Casey Gardner". We did immediately nerd out over cameras, photography and the bygone era of arts and fashion magazines. (Brigette was wearing an aviator cap with earflaps that day!)

After hanging out at an assortment of WAIF affiliated events - filled with an amazing spectrum of interesting artists and characters from all over the world. Brigette's style on screen and off is always impeccably nonchalant and effortlessly fitting any occasion and with their confidence of a side-show ringleader, which what is basically happening, the looks they pull are always fantastically gender euphoric.

Brigette and I have an artsy street kid way of conversing and collaborating. Just a few references and they just GET IT. So doing a photoshoot of Brigette just seemed organic grade DIY creative fun.

Before the shoot I wanted some inspo and being in NYC it's not so hard to find. I ate a cap of mushrooms from my magic therapy can at the Angelika to see the newest edition to New Queer Cinema I SAW THE TV GLOW by JANE SCHOENBRUN. In which Brigette co-stars and oh my stars. With lo-tech glitches seamlessly combined with hi-tech disorientating gorgeous visuals. The sound track is incredible not to mention the sound design was artfully mastered for a fully immersive experience. TURN IT UP.

I Saw The TV Glow

My psychedelic itchy mind wandered into the multiverse of this cinematic experience and the reality of knowing Brigette in person -- The proverbial fourth wall wasn't broken but was cerebral TV static. The portal of The Pink Opaque was not lost on me in that very moment.

The non-linear timeline riddled with glitchy 90's clips inspired so many visual ideas from my past, as the characters would be my age. I did walk out wondering which dimension I'd been thwarted. Incredibly subversive filmmaking and a very proud moment for my friend's heartfelt performance and work. This is clearly an important film that had to be made.

At some point I made an odd observation of 90's teen heartthrob magazines like Tiger Beat, Teen Beat, and Bop were lacking LGBTQIA+ representation and Brigette's body of work is growing into an amazing embodiment of some of these missing representations. I mean, it's hard to not notice Brigette being swooned over on social media! Yeahh Represent!

I reached out to a long time friend, fellow odd clown and multitalented Gerrold Vincent to take these fantastic photos.

Fun facts:

  • Brigette wasn't actually born in Dallas

  • Is trying to quit shoplifting from airports

  • Takes Kendo lessons

  • Eats an apple a day

"Modeling is gay."
  • "I don't speak much Spanish." fluently orders in Spanish at a Mexican food truck on Knickerbocker.

  • Is way cooler than Casey Gardner, despite what I've heard.

As I said when they arrived to the studio.

"You're like me, you just put on whatever and people like it."

"or whatever is available right there."

"haha Yas style is something you're born with."

Wait, what dimension are we, now?
